Tabata is 8 rounds of 20 seconds maximum effort followed by 10 seconds rest — exactly 4 minutes of work per movement. It was designed to develop both aerobic and anaerobic capacity simultaneously, and it works: a single Tabata interval done at true maximum effort is as demanding as a 20-minute steady-state session.

The built-in timer handles the 20:10 intervals automatically. Generate a movement, start the timer, and push for all 8 rounds.

Single-Movement vs Multi-Movement Tabata

Classic Tabata is a single movement for 8 rounds (e.g. burpees for 4 minutes). Multi-movement Tabata rotates two or four movements across the 8 rounds, reducing local fatigue but also reducing the aerobic intensity. Both are valid. Single-movement Tabata is harder. Multi-movement Tabata allows more complex combinations and tends to be more sustainable for beginners.

Best Movements for Tabata

The best Tabata movements are self-paced, technique-stable under fatigue, and work large muscle groups: burpees, air squats, push-ups, pull-ups, kettlebell swings, and rowing. Movements that break down under fatigue (snatches, muscle-ups) are less suitable for Tabata because technical failure in round 5 defeats the purpose of the format.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tabata?

Tabata is an interval format: 20 seconds of maximum effort followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated 8 times for a total of 4 minutes per movement. It was developed by Japanese researcher Izumi Tabata.

How hard should I go during the 20 seconds?

Maximum effort means you should feel like you can't sustain the pace beyond 20 seconds. If round 8 feels the same as round 1, you aren't pushing hard enough in rounds 1-4. Expect your output to drop 20-30% by the final round.

How does the Tabata timer work?

After generating your WOD, click the Timer button. The timer automatically handles the 20:10 intervals and counts down 8 rounds, beeping at each transition.
