About WOD Machine
WOD Machine is a free functional-fitness workout generator built to make training decisions easier. You can choose your available equipment, target muscles, movements, training level, and session format, then generate a complete WOD without creating an account. The site also includes full-hour sessions, short bodyweight workouts, benchmark workouts, built-in timers, and post-workout recipes.
How workouts are built
The generator does more than select movements at random. It classifies each of its 190+ exercises by seven attributes: modality (gymnastics, weightlifting, monostructural), movement pattern (push, pull, squat, hinge, lunge, carry, core, monostructural), primary muscle group, equipment required, complexity tier, typical loading range, and measurement type (reps, calories, distance, time). Those attributes are combined with the requested time domain and workout format to avoid obvious conflicts, balance movement patterns, select realistic rep schemes, and keep the intended stimulus coherent.
The constraint solver enforces ratio boundaries learned from the benchmark library — over 1,100 real workouts authored by coaches. A heavy barbell lift gets fewer reps and a longer rest window; a bodyweight conditioning piece gets higher volume under a shorter cap. The solver rejects combinations that would be unsafe or unproductive under fatigue, such as heavy overhead work paired with high-rep kipping movements or maximal loading under aggressive time caps. Rep counts are rounded to the memorable schemes athletes expect (21-15-9, 10-8-6, 50-40-30-20-10) rather than arbitrary numbers.
Full-hour sessions use the same exercise library and constraint engine but add a coordination layer: the warm-up is derived from the movements in the conditioning piece, the skill block is matched to the selected training mode (strength, gymnastics, technique, or choose-your-focus), and no movement appears in both the skill block and the WOD.
Our approach
Programming rules are reviewed using generated examples and corrected when combinations are unrealistic, needlessly repetitive, or technically unsuitable under fatigue. Movement records and prescribed loads are curated rather than copied blindly from historical workout data. Each movement entry includes scaling alternatives so athletes can substitute within the same pattern — a ring muscle-up can scale to a chest-to-bar pull-up, then to a banded pull-up, depending on the athlete's current ability.
The benchmark library is maintained separately from the generated workouts. Benchmark entries preserve the original prescribed loads, rep schemes, and time domains exactly as designed. When the generator returns a benchmark workout, it matches the athlete's equipment filter but does not alter the workout's structure.
WOD Machine is a training-planning tool, not individualized coaching or medical advice: athletes should scale loads, skills, volume, and intensity to their experience and current condition.
Available generators
The site offers three generator modes. The standard WOD generator builds a single conditioning workout in any duration tier from 5 to 45 minutes. The full-hour generator produces a complete class-style session — warm-up, skill or strength block, and conditioning piece — coordinated so no movement repeats between sections. The No Excuse generator targets bodyweight-only training capped at 16 minutes, built for hotel rooms, parks, and days when showing up matters more than equipment. All three generators share the same exercise library and constraint engine.
Who runs WOD Machine
WOD Machine is an independent web application for people who want practical functional-fitness programming at home, while travelling, or in the gym. Optional accounts add workout history, ratings, and personal records; the public generators and timers remain available without an account. Questions, corrections, and feedback can be sent through the contact link in the footer.
